Great Aussie Towns and Regions – #1 – Culburra, South Coast NSW
Just 2 & 1/2 hrs south of Sydney, Culburra sits in the Shoalhaven Local Government Area and is also the regional centre for the coastal villages of Currarong, Callala Beach, Callala Bay, Warrain Beach and Orient Point. Culburra is also the location of the famous Max Dupain photo “The Sunbaker”. Dupain took the iconic photograph in 1937.
Culburra and the Shoalhaven Heads area have some great beaches and stunning coastline. The area just to the south at Jervis Bay is famous for its white sand and secluded beaches. Culburra is also home of the famous surfing Wright family with Tyler the current defending Women’s World Surfing Champ and brother Owen just returning to the men’s World Championship Tour @wsl after a year in hiatus with a serious injury. His emotional victory on the Gold Coast at the Quicksilver Pro in the first event of the year would have left the Culburra surfing community celebrating just like they did when his younger sister Tyler brought home the World Title last year.

Cathryn shares with us why she believes Culburra Beach is a hidden gem on the south coast of NSW and how she came about buying a holiday home in the area. Cathryn told us, “she first visited Culburra in 2000 and thought she was in some sort of time warp when she arrived in the area”. The village reminded her of childhood memories and time spent in sleepy coastal towns up and down the east coast of NSW. In 2013 she returned and found that not much had changed since 2000 in Culburra, which she loved. Not long after this, Cathryn and her family decided to take the plunge and bought their first holiday home in the area. They renovated the house and eventually sold that place and bought another house right on the beach at Warrain Beach. They have done an amazing restoration of the property ‘Escape at Culburra’ with guests enjoying 5 bedrooms and direct beach access.
Cathryn is proud to share it with other families that visit Culburra and is a proud supporter of Australian Owned and Operated, Travelling Frogs. Cathryn and her family still take the odd spontaneous night or two when ‘Escape at Culburra’ is not booked. They pack the car, the kids, their dog and some wine and head down to their spectacular house on the beach to create some memories.
